Tuesdays with Timji, April 26,2016 - See Tim Miller's blog here:  http://timmiller.typepad.com/

Many years ago I had a reading with a western astrologer who said to me, “You have really good karma and a great chart for spiritual growth.” Like most people, at times I get swept up in the stresses and strains of daily life and temporarily lose sight of what a blessed existence I have. Then I remember, in times of quiet clarity, all the wonderful gifts I have been given in this lifetime—stable, loving parents and a happy childhood, a good education, a strong body and a quick mind, a brilliant guru, a vocation I love and the opportunity to travel all over the world teaching yoga, and a beautiful family—just to name a few. Someone once said, “To the one who is given much, much is expected in return.”
I first met Sean O’Shea in 1992 when he started attending classes at the old E St. studio. Sean was always quiet, humble, and unassuming when he came to class, which wasn’t that often because he was on a tight budget. Even so, he had the self -discipline to practice on his own and made great progress in spite of his infrequent appearances in my classes. In 1997 one of my yoga students, Joyce Lively, started a program called the Foundation for a Tobacco Free Youth, and we began a pilot program at the Ashtanga Yoga Center, teaching yoga to high school kids who were trying to quit smoking. Joyce later received funding for her program as part of the settlement of the lawsuit against the tobacco companies and was able to hire some teachers to spread the program to several high schools in North San Diego County. One of the teachers she hired was Sean, who demonstrated a remarkable ability to connect with these kids.
I continued to see Sean periodically over the years. One day he came to me and told me he was thinking of opening his own yoga studio in La Jolla. He said he considered me to be his teacher and was wondering if I’d be willing to give him my blessing in this enterprise. I said, “Of course,” and he proceeded to open Four Seasons Yoga in 2005. Even with his busy schedule of running the new yoga center, Sean and his girlfriend Gianna, would typically show up from my Thursday morning improv class. One Thursday morning right after Christmas in 2006 Sean and Gianna didn’t show up for class. Soon after I got home from work that day I got a call from Scripps Hospital in La Jolla saying that Sean and Gianna had been in an automobile accident. Sean had been killed instantly, but Gianna had suffered only minor injuries, so I drove to the hospital, picked her up and took care of her until her parents arrived. We were all absolutely stunned and grief-stricken by this tragedy.
There were two separate memorials for Sean, one at Four Seasons Yoga and the other at San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside. At each memorial there was a tremendous outpouring of love and affection for Sean as his family, friends, and students shared what a profound impact he had on their lives. He was a remarkably gifted and generous young man with a great ability to connect to people in a way that both inspired and empowered them. The Sean O’Shea Foundation continues Sean’s good work in the world and I am honored and humbled to be a part of it.

Words from the Schools and Hospitals we Have Served

Crystal Chuk
Riley Elementary School

“The Sean O’Shea Foundation has provided an incredible service to the students at New Dawn High School. The students have progressed in both their physical and emotional capabilities. Our program incorporates a therapeutic component into our education, and yoga has fit beautifully into our model. The staff has noticed that the students who participate in yoga are more able to cope with the stressors in their lives.

I was able to observe the program on a weekly basis, and have had the opportunity to participate in yoga as well. My favorite part of yoga is during savasana, as I see my students, who have incredibly stressful lives, relaxing for perhaps the only time each week. My students frequently fall asleep, and although this is not the purpose of savasana, it warms my heart that they feel safe in the yoga classes.

During our involvement with The Sean O’Shea Foundation, we have had three yoga instructors. Each and every one of the instructors has brought their unique gifts and talents to the program. All instructors have been nurturing, patient, kind, and calm. This is essential in working with our students with emotional disturbances, and the students respect the instructors. With our population of students, this is no small feat!

I would, and do, recommend The Sean O’Shea Foundation to others. The foundation is now a part of Riley, which is located next to our campus. They are enjoying the program, and are also endorsing the foundation. In conclusion, we are incredibly excited and blessed to have The Sean O’Shea foundation be a part of the New Dawn School, and hope that we will continue to be allowed to participate in the program.”

Jeanie Marie Spies
MSN RNC PNP, Oncology/integrative medicine Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, Rady Children’s Hospital

“Yoga has added another key healing modality to our integrative therapies for children with cancer.  It takes more than medicine to cure cancer and for our survivors to thrive after treatment and lead long and healthy lives.  The child must be truly “healed” and not just “cured” of this dreaded disease.  The body, spirit and mind need to all be healed for the patient to emerge from the cancer journey whole and healthy.  That is where our therapies come in.  Art therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, healing touch, Reiki, meditation, hypnosis and yoga are examples of the therapies we “integrate” into our cancer treatment  plan.  The parents and patients along with their siblings can all participate in yoga through the generous work of the Sean o Shea Foundation.  We have had yoga therapy at Rady’s since October of 2011.  The volunteers with the Sean O Shea Foundation are truly gifted.  They are skillful and compassionate.  Some of the volunteers are also cancer survivors.  At times we have yoga accompanied by volunteers who bring their guitars.  This adds so much to the healing modality.  Yoga has helped our families deal with pain, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and fatigue.  It helps them breath effectively and engages the parasympathetic (relaxation) nervous system.  Endorphins are produced by the body with each session leading to a sense of wellbeing.  It is exciting to see the research that is coming out regarding the benefits of yoga and other integrative therapies. I have seen patient’s faces and whole bodies relax after just a brief session.  Many of the children fall asleep after a session.  They are provided with a scented eye pillow from the yoga teachers to aid in the relaxation process. it is so awesome to witness a therapy that can be taught to young and old of all languages and walks of life.  It can transform lives.  Our hope is that our patients and families will continue to practice this ancient healing practice when they complete their therapy.   We are so grateful that the Sean O Shea Foundation has teamed up with our program.  They are even expanding into our Healthy Connections employee Wellness group to assist our hospital staff to achieve wellness.”

Ann Lacy
New Dawn High School teacher

“Dear Sean O’Shea Foundation, My name is Ann Lacy, and I am a special education teacher at New Dawn High School. This setting is unique, as all students have a primary disability of emotional disturbance. These High School students are some of the most “challenging” in the San Diego Unified School District. Many of these students come from broken homes, do not have the means to practice good nutrition or hygiene, and some do not even know where they will sleep at night.

Since the Sean O’Shea Foundation has come to New Dawn, there have been remarkable differences in the students who practice yoga. It is amazing to see the students who were not able to touch their toes last year, complete five sun salutations on their own, as well as the challenging poses Heidi gently teaches the students.  Each student has their favorite pose, and Heidi incorporates these moves in each session (mine is the boat.) The students have become more flexible, and look forward to their weekly yoga sessions.

More importantly than their increased physical endurance is the emotional changes I have seen in these students. My favorite part of the yoga sessions is when the students “take rest.” These students, who are often in a state of “fight or flight” mode, are able, with the peaceful, safe environment Heidi has created often fall asleep. This is such an incredible blessing for me to know that they have a moment of peace in an otherwise constant state of havoc. This is, in and of itself, a miracle.

I have noticed that our students who practice yoga have used the self-calming strategies throughout the day. Many have stated that yoga has helped them feel less tense, and enabled them to feel that they have control over their emotions. Some students who were not confident enough to play sports have joined our athletic teams, and our athletes have urged others to join because yoga has helped them with strength and flexibility. Heidi’s calm and reassuring demeanor in working with the students has been incredible, and students are not afraid to try new and challenging yoga positions.

I thank you so much for all that The Sean O’Shea Foundation has done for my students, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. You have truly helped to change these students’ lives, and I hope that you will continue to work with us at New Dawn.”

Frank Juarez, Torch Middle School, Los Angeles County, Deputy Probation Officer

“Once again we would like to extend our gratitude for your contribution to the students of Torch Middle School.  The Sean O'Shea Foundation's Yoga program has become one of Torch Middle School's elite after school programs.  Since the implementation of the Yoga program at Torch we have noticed the positive effect the program has had on participating students.  We humbly request the continuance of the program at Torch.  We thank you and hope that you choose to continue to positively impact the lives of these students.”

 Amanda Morris
MA MFT, SDUSD Mental Health Support Services (MHSS)

“I just wanted to take some time to acknowledge how wonderful it is to have The Sean O'Shea Foundation back at Clark Middle this year.  As you know, we had great success last year with our high needs students and are thrilled to have the opportunity again.  We have a great group of students this year hand selected by our special education department, in hopes their academic success will improve through the practice of yoga.  So far, we have seen a lot of progress in the students.  All of the students have some form of mental health concern, including ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, and more.  Due to these challenges the students struggle with both social interaction and classroom success.  Yoga has given them a common source of interest allowing them to practice and improve their social skills and build friendships they did not have before.  As the students become more in touch with their minds and control of their bodies, they are beginning to have more control over their behavior and improved self-esteem.  We believe through continued practice with Sean O'Shea the students will continue to excel.  It has been wonderful working with Tracey.  The students really enjoy her high energy and fun attitude.  Thanks so much for the opportunities your organization brings.”

Abby
San Marcos juvenile Court appointed High School

"During the past two years I have witnessed the incredible impact of the Sean O'Shea Foundation on our students and the professionalism and expertise of your yoga instructors. Breaking Cycles is not a traditional classroom and it takes a unique program to be able to come in and make a meaningful impact. Through the practice of yoga, meditation, and breathing the students have been given another tool to help them cope with poverty, violence, drug use, gang activity and all the other pressures of a teenage life. Our student's lives are filled with instability and chaos and it's amazing to see the transformation in the classroom after one of your yoga sessions. Students who are normally disruptive and inattentive become calm and responsive to learning. The students gain self-worth and confidence when after only a few classes they become capable of doing something they laughed at and thought was impossible. I only wish we could have the Sean O'Shea Foundation start off every morning as the hours after your visit are always the most positive and productive of the week."

Kevin Ogden, Superintendent, Julian Union School District

“The yoga program provided by the Sean O'Shea Foundation has provided an amazing opportunity for our students. Growing up in a rural mountain community often limits what is available for our boys and girls. Having the opportunity to have such a positive yoga experience has allowed our students exposure to something that can continue to improve and enhance their lives. We sincerely appreciate our partnership with the Foundation.”

Frank Juarez, Torch Middle School, Los Angeles County, Deputy Probation Officer

“Once again I would like to thank you and Ms. Gianna as well as all members and contributors of the Sean O'Shea Foundation for making it possible for the Yoga program at Torch Middle School to exist.  Although there has been a recent change in administration at Torch, I am confident that the new administration will follow my recommendation for the continuance of this program at Torch.  A program that students were once very skeptic about has become a much valued and pursued program by many Torch students.  It is evident that the program has enriched the lives of participating students through yoga.  Participating students have improved academically, socially and demonstrated a level of calm during turbulent times.  The overwhelming majority of the first group enlisted in the program demonstrated significant improvement in their grade point averages.  Furthermore, I personally witnessed a pro-social change in behavior within this very group.  Students in the program were more willing to listen, had less negative behavior referrals from their teachers and showed growth in regards to maturity over other students on my caseload that were nonparticipants.  It is for this reason that I humbly ask for the continuance of the Yoga program at Torch Middle School.  We look forward to the return of the program and thank you once again for your contribution to this community.”

David Pierce, PE Teacher, Julian Elementary School

“My students and I want to extend our deepest thanks to the Sean O'Shea foundation. As an elementary school PE teacher I see my students grow in strength and character from Kindergarten on up. The weeks that our Julian students spent practicing yoga with our instructor, Joy Bennett, have added so much in both areas. The focus on balance and control, the discussions around values and goals - this program has helped expand our kids' horizons.  Thank you for bringing this wonderful opportunity to our small school!”

Natasha Pantti-Dulberg, MFT, Mental Health Case Worker, New Dawn Day Rehab High School, San Diego

“I am writing this letter to give thanks for the amazing Yoga and Nutrition program you provided our students.  The teachers were knowledgeable, intuitive, flexible and sensitive to the kids’ needs.  Our program is unique in that it deals with kids with serious behavioral issues and the designation of Emotional Disturbance on their IEPs.  Most of them come from very troubled backgrounds, and don’t have a lot of family or community support.  The kids excitedly anticipated the yoga class each Monday, and several other students who were not registered begged to be involved.  I heard from program staff they also thoroughly enjoyed participating in the program and reaped benefits such as weight loss, better nutrition choices, and a passion to continue a yoga practice.  As someone who has been attending yoga classes for over ten years, I benefited from deepening my understanding of the proper alignment, and gaining the skill and confidence that I could do a few sun salutations each morning on my own, even if I only had 5 minutes, to feel more grounded and productive throughout my day.  The yoga teachers, Chris and Dana, certainly met the kids at the level they were at and encouraged them every step of the way.  Dana and Chris worked well together and were also great about entering the school space respectfully and collaborating with the program staff to best suit the needs of the kids.  All in all, I had high expectations for the Sean O’Shea Foundation, and those expectations were exceeded.  I am very sad that the program has now ended because I did not want them to leave!  The kids are also still talking about how the yoga program has influenced their lives, and how they too are able to practice on their own to invite relaxation and stress relief.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for offering this life-changing experience to our kids.”

Natasha Pantti-Dulberg, MFT, Mental Health Case Worker, New Dawn Day Rehab High School, San Diego

“As always, I'd like to thank you for the caliber of and quality of your program.  It has become a significant piece of New Dawn's culture.  I have been here three and a half years, and I was just thinking this morning that despite getting more severe cases the last year, the campus has had a surprisingly small amount of serious/dangerous crisis incidents.  I have no doubt that the yoga program has helped to bring an increased level of self-awareness and serenity to each student and staff who has participated, and others by example.  Thank you for your amazing foundation and the kindness and generosity that you extend to these kids who would probably never be exposed to yoga otherwise.  Heidi is a skilled teacher, a kind soul, and is an inspiration to watch with our sometimes difficult kids.  Clearly she could handle any class of children, because she does it here while making it appear effortless.  She manages to teach them very advanced poses while inspiring their cooperation and making them believe in their ability to do it.  They adore her, and are so supported and nurtured by the appropriate physical touch guiding them through their program.”

Marcia Ferrell, MSN, FNP

“I am the nurse at New Dawn High School and I just want to let you know what the Sean O'Shea yoga classes have done for the students and staff. After the initial shock of attending a yoga class the students really got into it. They have learned to relax, follow their bodies and most of all to meditate. Though most think of it as nap time. They walk out feeling relaxed and invigorated. Your classes have brought of group of students together that never would have thought they would participate. From the studious to the most street savvy. For me it reawakened the balance that yoga brings to your life and how good it feels to stretch the old muscles, especially after sitting all day. Heidi is wonderful with the kids and has brings a sense of wellbeing and quietness to the class. She has most of the students knowing the Sanskrit words for the poses and numbers. Most participate and say the poses with her. The Sean O'Shea yoga classes have been a gift to our school.”

Ann Lacy, New Dawn High School teacher

“I would like to take a moment to share our experience with the Sean O’Shea Foundation. Dana and Chris were incredibly encouraging, and engaged the students immediately. Many of the students were nervous about yoga, but Dana and Chris stressed the importance of working to individual potential. After hearing from the students in my class, other students clamored to be in our program! Throughout the six week program, the students gained confidence in practicing yoga, and eagerly awaited Mondays. Every Monday morning, I had students asking me if Dana and Chris were coming.

Dana and Chris arrived ahead of schedule every Monday, and were well prepared for the theme of each session. Nutrition was intermingled with yoga, and the students were able to learn about the effects of healthy choices, flexibility, balance, and how to use yoga to calm themselves in everyday situations. I myself have stopped drinking a Big Gulp every day, and have lost six pounds!

I teach a cooking class once a week and the students have used produce from our gardens to create healthy snacks such as grilled vegetables, salsas, and bruschetta. I have one student who stated that he hates vegetables, but after trying grilled yellow squash, he told asked his mother to buy some for him to grill!

Overall, the program was a complete success, and I thank you so much for the opportunity it has given me and my students to practice yoga and improve our nutritional habits. As you may know, we teach some of the most challenging students in the San Diego Unified School District, and the success of this program testifies to the dedication of your foundation to reach every student, and to make changes in their lives. I sincerely thank you for your program.”

Fredy Moreno, Ed.S., NCSP, SDUSD Special Education Programs Department - School Psychologist

“The majority of students enjoyed the yoga program and has requested to participate in any future yoga programs.  I have not experienced such enthusiasm coming from the students for any other event.  I, myself, was amazed when I saw the students participating in a quiet, intense program for an hour.  Some of the students have difficulty following simple directions in and out of the classroom.  Some of them have even refused to follow directions given by parents, staff, and police officers.  The patience, love, and dedication that the yoga instructors demonstrated allowed the students to feel comfortable while participating in an activity that is very different than they are accustomed to.”

Irene Vico
Jefferson Middle School, Oceanside Unified School District, California

“Jefferson Middle School is a place where many students struggle with all the challenges children at risk face.  Yoga classes through the Sean O’Shea Foundation provide a rare opportunity for many students to experience another way to look at the world as they build the confidence required to think independently and make better life choices.  Gloria O’Shea presents the nutrition part of this program.  With patience and compassion she speaks clearly to students about the dietary choices they make every day.  The table is set with healthy choices lined up next to a huge blob of ugly yellow plastic, molded to resemble the fat that clogs our arteries.  The hideous fat blob draws gasps for the wide-eyed crowd of fidgety middle school students.

“How can we avoid this artery clogging substance?”  Gloria asks.  The students are quiet; everyone wants to know how to avoid the artery clogging substance, fat.  Gloria continues, engaging the group of students by speaking enthusiastically about fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden and pizza as a treat with thin crust and no fatty meats.   A student next to me asks if I have ever had a papaya like his grandfather grows in his backyard.  The discussion continues as we all celebrate with tales of healthy home cooking and the joy of eating fresh produce from the garden.  Gloria ends discussion by sharing a healthy snack of fresh salsa and chips, vegetables with tahini dip and a delicious smoothie of fresh fruit, juice and yogurt.  Everyone was delighted and all the vegetables were gone. Gloria O’Shea does not “candy coat” this important message and the students eat it up.”

Lindsay Walker
Site Supervisor, Grapevine Elementary, Vista, CA

“I am the site supervisor of an elementary afterschool program. This year has been the second year that I have had the pleasure of having the Sean O'Shea foundation come to our program and teach our at risk 5th graders Health and Yoga. They were phenomenal! My fifth graders are making better choices in what they eat, and have learned the basic steps in Yoga. They taught them how to de-stress with stillness and breathing techniques as well as Yoga moves. My students loved it and have shown more calmness as they progressed! I cannot thank the Sean O’Shea program enough for what they are doing to help support our youth in making positive choices in their lives while building their self-worth! Thank you Sean O'Shea Foundation!!”

Louis A. Tavern
CSI, I. Program Supervisor, Cesar Chavez Middle School, Oceanside, CA

Seven weeks ago we inquired about the Sean O'Shea Foundation coming to our school to instruct our students on the benefits of yoga.  Upon our initial orientation we decided to become teammates and by the next week the classes were off and running.  Each Monday at 1:15pm 25 kids would come to the after school program sign in and head down to the multi-purpose room and prepare for an hour of non-stop exhilarating exercise.  The kids that attended the program returned refreshed, calm, relaxed and eager to do their homework.  I directly relate that to the yoga instructors and their ability to instruct our kids and teaching them to be in tune with their bodies.  Without fail the instructors were on time and truly gifted to teach our students. We intend to have the Sean O'Shea Foundation back soon for another seven week session of yoga."

Haunani Chong
Change Leader & Independent Executive
"The Sean O'Shea Foundation is amazing, planting seeds, and allowing children to see that there are OPTIONS other than the traditional forms of movement, way of thinking, nutrition, and taking care of the environment.  Just planting these seeds is a HUGE step and a major reason that the Sean O'Shea Foundation will continue to grow."

Luz Martinez
San Luis Rey Elementary, Oceanside

“I just wanted to thank you so very much for having provided such an enriching opportunity for students at SLR!! First, I want to let you know that students always looked forward to Monday afternoons because they knew yoga class was scheduled for that day! Each time I asked for feedback from the students that participated in the class, they always had positive words and a smile on their face! As I saw students participate in the exercises, I was awed by their progress, enthusiasm, and focus! It was very encouraging to see how some of our special needs students showed little to no differences in their skills and coordination . Thank you and the O'Shea Foundation for having given our students motivation for making healthy choices!  I look forward to future collaboration with you.”

Elizabeth Fautsch
San Diego Yoga Teacher

“I have been teaching yoga to adults for ten years, and have witnessed yoga's power to change lives for the better - physically and mentally. The Sean O'Shea Foundation is doing a wonderful job of taking yoga into classrooms with a program geared to kids from 11-18. It makes yoga fun for them, teaches them sound nutritional principles, and increases their awareness of environmental challenges and how they can become "greener". Also of note is that the schools served by the foundation have significant numbers of Title I students, and not a single school has had to pay a penny for the 7-week program.”

Carmel Valley Middle School
Peer Tutor Student

"The Sean O'Shea Foundation Yoga program has helped me so much. Even though I did yoga before, they helped me to look deeper into the poses I have done so many times before. My form has improved so much since they came to my school. I am extremely grateful. Their weekly visits to my school have relieved me of some of the every day stress of school. It was a nice break from the constant movement of life. Thanks Sean O'Shea!"

Laura Anderson
Chula Vista Learning Community Charter
“I wanted to acknowledge all of you for the powerful work you do with our children. For months, students have been asking me about yoga classes and telling me how excited they are. As we have participated with the Sean O'Shea foundation over the last 2 years, I have seen a building momentum of awareness and acceptance of yoga. Teachers and students that used to brush yoga off as an "alternative" practice that they would never attempt, are now seeing it as a normal part of our community. I had the opportunity to observe the first 10 minutes of yoga class today, and was very impressed with the effectiveness of instruction, especially in the area of nutrition. I am very concerned with the health of our students, especially since they have a maximum of 30 minutes per week of physical education at school. If they are not participating in physical activity outside of school, they are not getting any exercise. Thank you for all your hard work and PLEASE let me know if you need any additional support.”

Bekki Colley, EDP/Recess Director-San Diego Cooperative Charter

“Thank you for allowing our school to participate in your seven week yoga program. Our Middle School students especially enjoyed this opportunity. They looked forward to the nutrition information as well as all the movement, positions and stretches they learned. With the adolescent group we often struggle to motivate them to get moving and eat healthier, but your program made it fun and easy for them to succeed.

Our students were very positive about what they experienced and learned. They truly enjoyed the classes and are sad to see it come to an end. I appreciate the wonderful opportunity given to us. This has been a great program to offer our students. Thank you!”

Lindsay Walker,
Site Supervisor, Grapevine Elementary, Vista, California

"This was a wonderful adventure for my 5th grade students who all have shown great growth in their overall health. As a teacher I am pleased when I see students making healthier choices in their diets. These students have taken what you taught them and have gone even further with reading up on their "old favorite" foods that they used to eat finding that most of the ingredients are not natural and are full of preservatives.

They have shared with me how excited they were with learning Yoga and many of them have shared what they have learned with their family and friends! Wow! This excitement is what drives us teachers to teach! Watching what we introduce to them become a part of their life and watching them make positive personal decisions every day!

Thank you, thank you for empowering our youth and really doing something in the community that makes a positive impact."

Patti Justo-Ober SDUSD
RN, Knox Elementary, San Diego

"Our classes here at Knox are going very well. It is so fun to see the kid's progress! It seems like every week they enjoy it more and more. They are really learning strategies to cope with their day-to-day stresses. I enjoy talking nutrition with them. They are all trying new fruits and vegetable, and are very excited to share their experiences! Yoga is truly a gift for our students, and I feel honored to be part of the program. Kam is a gem - we are so blessed to have her with us!"

Bill McGrath
Ph.D, Juvenile Court Community Schools, San Diego, CA

"For over thirty years I have been involved in education as a teacher for AT RISK students and University Professor. This summer (2010) I was approached by one of my former University students, asking me if I knew of the SEAN O'SHEA YOGA FOUNDATIION. Well, my reply was no, but that soon changed and so have myriad things in our classroom. Each Monday since the start of September Susan and Miho come to class to work with our 24 juvenile offenders. The initial reaction amongst colleagues and probation officers was, to be polite, skeptical. And now the skeptics have been converted to advocates. These two trainers come in with focus and energy and I have seen our class transform into a remarkable room where in our expectations have been enhanced.

The children in my class need a lot of energy and the SOS Foundation has shown them that the answers for their energy lie within themselves. I have seen several of our students get excited with a positive anticipation for the class and their enthusiasm has been contagious to classmates.

There are hundreds of clichés that are floating around as I type this - "YOU NEVER KNOW" And obviously, we do not. But what I do know is that the folks from SOS have lifted us both literally and figuratively to a better place and my hope is they continue to come to our space and share their energy We are better for their efforts. Thanks."

Fredy Moreno

"Stress relief, increase in focus, increased self-control and happiness have been reported by students who have participated in this program. I have collaborated with The Sean O'Shea Foundation in implementing this program in the elementary school, middle school and high school level. The program has helped students, parents, school staff and other community members gain access to the practice of yoga and insight in living a healthier life. Individuals with emotional/behavioral difficulties, developmental disorders, learning disabilities and others living stressful lives in an area where high rates of homicide, gang activity and poverty exist. The results have been nothing less than spectacular. Individuals are provided with a safe place to take a break from everyday stressors and work towards reaching a physical, mental and emotional balance in their lives."

Dr. Robert Biter
OBGYN, San Diego, CA

"Imagine a family taking the vision of a loved one and reaching out to disadvantaged youths to teach them skills needed to cope, thrive and break the cycles of poverty, teen pregnancy, violence and substance abuse by simply teaching them to breath. This foundation makes yoga easily accessible to a group of kids who need the stress reduction and personal clarity that yoga offers, but are not those able to afford or even be introduced to this practice. This group has carried on Sean's mission!"

Heather Meyers
Health and Physical Education, Jefferson Middle School, Oceanside, CA

"I have shared with other staff members the foundation and everyone thinks that it is great for our students. I was actually talking about it the other day with a PE teacher who teaches at one of the elementary schools that the foundation is at. She has also been impressed with your instructors. Our principal would love to see it return (and so would I) so I will apply for the spring."

Sonny Gonzalez
SDCCS EDP Staff, Chula Vista Middle School

"I am writing in regards to the Grant that was received for The Sean O'Shea Yoga Foundation. I have witnessed improvements in strength, flexibility and health among each of the students whom have participated in the duration of the program while at our school site. The yoga instructor demonstrated professionalism throughout each lesson. He also possessed the ability to interact with the students in a positive manner. Yoga promotes physical activity and helps students understand what it means to live a life of wellness. I strongly recommend that San Diego Cooperative Charter School continue to provide Yoga to all students who are interested in becoming a healthy individual for life."
